What is empirical formula?
- It is the molecular formula of a compound in the lowest terms.
What is empirical mass ?
- Relative molecular mass of empirical formula of a compound is called empirical mass of that compound.
To find,
Empirical formula of CH3COOH ( Acetic acid ) and it's emporical mass
Solution:
In this chemical formula,
No. of atoms of C = 2
No. of atoms of H = 4
No. of atoms of O = 2
Ratio of no. of atoms of these three elements in this compound = 2:4:2
Now, reducing this to lowest terms we get :-
1:2:1
Empirical formula is :- CH2O
It's empirical mass = 12 + (2×1)+16 = 30u
