Solution :-

we know that,

  • Downstream Speed = (Speed of Boat in Still water + Speed of Water in The river).
  • Upstream Speed = (Speed of Boat in Still water - Speed of Water in The river).

so, Let us assume that, the speed of boatman is still water is x km/h and speed of current is y km/h .

then,

→ (x - y) = 12/6 { S = D/T } .

→ x - y = 2 ---------- Eqn.(1)

and,

→ x + y = 2/(50/60) = 2 * (6/5) = 12/5 ---------- Eqn.(2)

adding Eqn.(1) and Eqn.(2),

→ x - y + x + y = 2 + (12/5)

→ 2x = (22/5)

→ x = (11/5) km/h .

putting value of x in Eqn.(1),

→ (11/5) - y = 2

→ y = (11/5) - 2

→ y = (1/5) km/h .

therefore,

→ Time taken to cover 8km in still water = D/S = 8/(11/5) = (40/11) hours = 3(7/11) = 3 + (7*60/11) = 3 + (420/11) ≈ 3 hours , 38 minutes (Ans.)
