It's about the swindling of poor peasants at the hands of wealthy landowners somewhere in Europe during the 19th century. The poor people would bring their produce (wild mushrooms, herbs from the forest, etc.) to a weighing station owned by the wealthy Balek family. There the peasants would receive a few pennies for the items depending on the bulk weight, determined by a set of balance scales. One evening one of the poor children discovers that the weights are a little off in the favor of the buyers. He has brought in his day's work of produce and is waiting alone in the weighing room while the rich wife goes to get him a lemon drop candy. He absentmindedly begins to play with the weights and discovers the error. He goes home and tells the parents, who spread the news that all of them have been cheated for generations. This becomes a public scandal, and the Baleks are hounded from the village. The whole point of the story revolves around the underprivileged of the world being taken advantage of by the rich and powerf
