Absolute cell referencing: The process in cell reference is that formula remains unchanged whenever copy function is executed. Being helpful, the feature is used in a specific cell for multiple calculations.

when using the relative cell referencing, if the formula is copied from one cell to the other, it adjusts itself to have the same relation to new location.  

  • For example: If cell C10 contains formula =SUM(C1: C9) and it is copied to E10, formula is automatically adjusted to =SUM(E1: E9)
  • Whereas, when you use absolute referencing, the formula will remain the same even after you copy it to other cells.
  • For example: If the formula in cell C11 is =SUM($C$1:$C$10), when you copy the formula to a new location E44, the formula in new location will remain the same as =SUM($C$1:$C$10)
  • The use of '$' before column letter indicated that the reference to column is absolute or fixed. and '$' used before row represents an absolute row reference.
