Exclusion is used to manage the behaviour of pupils. It is used to give a clear message to the pupils and the whole school community that certain types of behaviour are unacceptable in the school. A pupil can be excluded for a maximum period of 45 school days in an academic year.

Some reasons for exclusion of a pupil are:

1. Physical assault - fighting and violent behaviour

2. Verbal abuse - aggressive behaviour and swearing

3. Bullying - verbal or physical

4. Racist abuse - racist taunting and harassment

5. Damage - damage to school property or personal belongings of a member of the school community

6. Theft - stealing school or personal property

7. Persistent disruptive behaviour - disobedience and violation of school rules

Some strategies to set up an inclusive school and classroom are:

1. Setting up a friendly and congenial environment in the classroom - There should be no form of violence or fear. The children should feel comfortable and safe. The atmosphere in the classroom should not be stressful.

2. Use of suitable teaching and learning materials - Use of visual, audio, and audio-visual teaching aids to suit the needs of all the children.

3. All the children should be given equal attention - The teachers should be suitably trained so that they can impart knowledge keeping in mind the needs of all the children.

4. Use of proper teaching methods - Teaching and learning should not involve only memorizing. There should be practical work which gives an opportunity to the students to express their different talents and skills.

5. Teaching should be interesting and simple - The content should be appropriate for the age group and abilities of the students. It should be presented in a simple way which is easy to understand. Interactive activities should be taken up in which all can participate.

6. Teachers Training - The teacher should be adequately trained in the techniques of making a classroom inclusive. She should know how to deal with children who have different abilities.

7. Tell the students that their language matters - Usually students do not understand the power of words. The teacher should make them understand that what they say can have a great deal of influence on others.

8. A teacher should not ignore the students when they use harmful language or slurs - A teacher should check the students when they use some popular new phrase which may cause harm or hurt the feelings of someone.

9. Teachers should interrupt when students make excessive fun of someone - If students are not nice to some pupil and make fun of the way he talks, looks, smells or dresses up the teacher should check them before they exceed the limit.

10. A teacher should not use students' differences to teach in the class - The teacher should not give an example of a student while teaching about a low income or high income group. The teacher should not compare a brilliant and weak student.
