Birsa Munda was born in ulihatu, in Ranchi, in Jharkhand. He gained a lot of popularity among the masses. He advocated the rights of the Mundas as the real proprietors of the soil and sought to abolish the existence of middlemen .However he was captured by the British in 1900 and soon died in captivity in the Ranchi jail.
