speed- the rate of covering the distance is called speed.

velocity- the rate of covering the displacement is called velocity.

speed is a scaler quantity i.e has only magnitude and no direction s=distance/time
velocity is a vector quantity and has both magnitude and a particular direction v= displacement/time.
