As we take in food it passes through a continuous canal. This canal consists of bucal cavity, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine that finally ends in the rectum.
The food from the bucal cavity passes down in the oesophagus and then to the stomach. The inner walls of the stomach, the small intestine and the various glands like salivary gland, pancreas, liver secretes digestive enzymes. These enzymes convert the complex substances of food into simpler compounds which then provides energy.
Thus these are the functions that are performed by the organs of digestive system.
