  • When a metal reacts with steam then the products formed are metal oxide and hydrogen gas.

Metal + steam → Metal oxide + Hydrogen

  • Iron reacts with steam to form iron(II,III) oxide and hydrogen.

3Fe(s) + 4H2O(g) steam → Fe3O4 (s) + 4H2(g)

  • When aluminium reacts with steam , it forms aluminium hydroxide and hydrogen gas is liberated . Aluminium forms a very strong oxide when reacted with normal water , but when steam is passed over aluminium , it forms aluminium hydroxide due to more energy being supplied.

Al + 3H2O(steam) → Al(OH)3 + 3H2
