Escapism is one way to run away from harsh reality of life. Life has become very difficult for many people. Many people feel overwhelmed by the myriad of decisions, problems and issues they have to face every day. Some of these people are able to overcome these challenges while others can not cope.
Many people resort to drugs as way of escaping the harsh realities of life like death, job loss, unemployment, bullying, divorce, and financial hardships. Escapism also encompasses running away, getting into addictions and even suicide. Many suicides are a form of escapism for many people.

It is quite true escapism is one way to run away from harsh reality. Every human being has this escapist’s attitude in him/her. In fact it is a psychological defense mechanism. It is quite active in teenagers. They often use escapism in the form of fantasizing.
In the poem Amanda, Amanda also indulges in this type of escapism. Her mother is quite critical of her ways and behavior; she often scolds her. However, Amanda always remains in her dream world.
In the chapter Third Level also Charlie’s psychiatrist friend Sam also escapes to a leisurely town, Galesburg, where life was not as stressful as in New York.
