Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions within cells and whole organisms such as temperature, water, and sugar levels. This keeps cells and organisms functioning at optimal levels even when challenged by internal and external changes.
Key hormones
Blood glucose concentration is monitored and controlled by the pancreas. Two of the key hormones involved in regulating this process are insulin, which controls uptake of glucose by different cells, and glucagon, which controls release of glucose from stores within the body. Diabetes can occur if this regulation does not occur correctly.
Blood pressure is controlled by the anti-diuretic hormone which conserves the volume of water in the body by reducing the amount of water passed out in the urine.
Hypothalamus receives signals from the nervous system and secretes neurohormones that regulate the pituitary gland secretions.The pituitary gland controls other endocrine glands of the body.
