Yes they are more influenced by there peer group (same age friends) and this is normal behavior of this age group. They want recognition and gain attention or be central point of their group and sometime they get ready go any extent to achieve this.
They also feel that can more free in discussions or more just talking and revelling themselves without being judged in peer group rather then opening wondering of parents and elders. At this age they at stage where they were in process of experiencing and learning more abstract things and want to test the information they have by own i.e. they want to try to do and feel every emotion, every exciting experience and they don't like preaching or receiving plain orders from others. They want to explore and experience. I do remember one statement by teen boy “Ok, you said this is bad. Let me experience this so that I can advice same to my children in better way.”
They want to built there own experience and knowledge and this good thing because you cannot transfer learning to next generation in encapsulated form. The next generation have to experience it by themself so that they convert knowledge into wisdom and wisdom only comes through experiencing the knowledge. When you are able to process information this become knowledge and when you can use knowledge in different situation then knowledge become wisdom. (When you can foresee situations and comes with best solutions without actually experiencing the problem/proactive).
Parents need to be more open and non judgemental, they must listen to teens, provided them with knowledge & information and help them experience and develp wisdom of there own; rather then passing judgements: this is right, that is wrong, this he or she can do and that is prohibited. Top of it, “why you are arguing? When I am saying this is wrong”, while teen genuinely wanted to know and understand the logic so that he can build his knowledge and wisdom. Teen brain doesn't accept information that he can't connect or relate with. There brain require acceptable reasons.: Why? How? Where? When? ect. And adult brain is conditioned other way any clarification sought is equal to challenging there authority. Which need to be delt with force and such behavior must be eliminated. Teens hate this, got confused that why parent are overreacting while he/she just wanted to know the reason or logic behind given instruction or decision. This create gap and teen got more comfortable with peer group. But parent must not forget there role as elder is to advise and lead the teen on right path. Listening, advising and helping must not be vague, they must not accept deviation from right path or wrong things. They keep on telling spade a spade.
So coming to point yes teen are more influenced by peer group then parents and that is ok.
