Abhay Charanaravind Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born on 1 September 1896, on the second day of Janmashtami, in a Bengali family in Calcutta, to Suvarna Vaishnav. These were known as Abhaya Charan, meaning fearless and one who takes refuge at the feet of Lord Krishna.
They were also called Nandu Lal as they were born on Nandotsav. The father’s name was Gaur Mohan Dey, a cloth merchant, and mother’s name was Rajni, a housewife.
