Answer:
An Accidental Hero
I open the heavy wooden door. The hall is absolutely crammed with injured people. Some are lying down while people crowd around them. Others sit on chairs and wait in pain for the single doctor to get to them. They are all waiting for one person. Me.
I am visiting Christchurch in New Zealand with my family. An hour earlier, we had been visiting the magnificent cathedral, when the ground began to shake. We had all just escaped before the ceiling began to crumble. Others around us weren’t so lucky. There are now people everywhere in the streets. Some injured, some worse.
Halls like this one where I now stand are becoming make-shift safe houses.
As a doctor, I am helping injured people that come to the hall. My sister is bringing people to me one at a time. This time, it is a small boy, about the age of five. He has a cut on his forehead and gashes to his legs.
”He’s my brother. He was walking under a verandah when a part of it crumbled on him. I got him out.” I reach into one of the first aid cases I took from a camping store I’d found. I wrap his legs and head with a bandage. When I am done, he limps out of the room, asking his sister when they will see Mum and Dad again. It is heartbreaking.
I am exhausted. When we walk to the motel, which is probably not a motel anymore, I hardly notice the damage that the earthquake has caused. I can’t stop thinking about the people I have seen, spoken to. The children with no one anymore. Some wondering where they are. Others lying down, crying. But the worst thing is that I cannot help them all. When we finally reach the motel, I am surprised to see it all in one piece. We just don’t realize it.
The next day, I return to the hall, helping many victims. Most of them stayed here overnight. Some have gone to other people’s houses which are still standing. I help lots more people.
The day finally comes for me to go home. I have helped many and try to feel proud. But I can’t. I don’t feel as if I’ve done enough. But as I step onto the plane, I realize that my help will be appreciated. I have become an accidental hero.
I hope this would work !!
