There is an increase in old age homes in Bangalore. In economic terms one would say that “supply increases as the demand increases”. Most of the old age homes that come to existence, now a days, do not rise with the motive of looking after the well being of the neglected elderly; but comes to existence mainly because of their interest in the foreign money that would pour into their trust. The above said statement should not lead to any form of generalization as there are organizations whose sole interest is to look after the needs of the neglected elderly. Having said the motives of the organizations, one has to know that it (either of the motives) doesn’t change the problems (emotional or others) faced by the elderly in the old age homes. A few are listed below. If you feel there are more, please do add them in the form of comments.
1.The person who has been put into an old age home would (naturally) be very sad. This is quite justified since they are (usually) leaving the only home they have known for years -- including all the memories.
2. Most of the people who are put into the old age home, start developing a fear that rises from the thought that moving into an old age home is the final step before death. This is usually true since once there, they usually do not return to their own home.
3. Loneliness is a enduring problem with many. For some visits from their loved ones are few and far in-between.
4.Once in a old age home, they tend to lose their independence. This in itself gives the feeling that their life is over. Along with loss of independence, they lose their self-esteem too. Now, anything they do is part of a planned activity.
5. In case they are religious, they can no longer go and pray to a place of worship of their choice; but instead attend the service provided by the retirement home.
