Clean India - Desire of Every Citizen
Since 2nd Oct., 2014 the whole of India is aware of cleanliness and hygiene. Swach Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign) has woken up all the sleepy and careless minds. A country wide huge mission is started to change the life of rural Indian people to modern style. All that is done to make the desire of Mahatma Gandhi that Indian peasants know about sanitation and practice it.
PM Modi triggered a prestigious movement. All citizens accessible to media of any kind is aware of it. Clearly all citizen want Clean India. Clean India campaign has the main tasks as :
1. Construction of toilets in rural and urban areas. Provide access to
sanitation facilities to all people.
2. Provide hygienic fresh drinking water to all citizens at their residences.
Further the regular lifting of (domestic) waste from residential areas is given importance. This municipal task is now under close monitoring. As many citizen are aware of its importance, many voluntary groups have formed. They are regularly monitoring it.
In India it has been a habit to spit (Paan/tambaku etc.) on the road or on the side walls. It has been a habit to pass urine on the side walls in the streets. It is also a practice since ages to throw all kinds of things onto the road and in between houses. Further, it has been a traditional practice to defecate in public lands. Adults used to defecate early in the morning or in the evening in vacant lands. Children go anywhere. It is a habit to litter everywhere. Smoking residues, crumpled papers, used up stuff are all exhibited to others rather than putting them in the right place.
The reasons are many. People do not have money to construct toilets. They do not have good knowledge of science and of hygienic lifestyle. Prime Minister Modi has taken the task to lift the prestige of India which fell down very low in front of foreigners.
Now, even children of India know what to do. Swach Hindustan taught them. All citizen have understood the harm due to their ignorance. People use the good way of waste disposal and management. People are taking care to see that their localities, schools, offices, villages are not used as dumping yards by others.
Citizen have a good desire to keep their locality that way. The mosquito bites have reduced over the last three years. Clean India campaign is not completely successful only because in some areas, there is no permanent water supply; Neither for drinking nor for use in toilets.
Tough every citizen's desire is Clean India. It does not seem to be that easy as garbage disposal. Vehicular pollution, harmful chemicals pollution, greenhouse gases and smoke coming from burning of fuels, agricultural wastes (produces) have increased tremendously. The recent (Nov 2017) foggy smoke or smoky fog in the national capital region (New Delhi) have clearly shown it. Many towns and cities in India face a problem of dust. There are lakhs of people suffering from respiratory diseases because of UNCLEAN India.
Since November 2017, the desires of all citizens for even better cleaner India have been expressed.
I want Clean streets, roads, buildings, offices, schools and temples. I desire a clean India or Swach Bharat. But I wonder when we are going to get it. Who will give it to us? It is us, as a whole community, who have to decide that. We have to act on it individually today. Clean India is not just avoiding littering. It is a lot more than that.
I hope you are with me too in wishing for it !
