These water bodies are also important for their potential to recharge groundwater and absorb excess rain to prevent urban flooding.
Encroachment of water bodies has been identified as a "major cause" of flash floods in Mumbai (2005), Uttarakhand (2013), Jammu and Kashmir (2014) and Chennai (2015) in the past one-and-half decades.
Their revival and better management assume even more significance if the Niti Aayog's warning is to be taken seriously: Groundwater levels in 21 major cities, including Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad, will dry up completely by 2020 (next year), affecting 100 million people.

Everyday experiences and studies have shown that more and more water bodies are disappearing from the urban and rural landscapes due to uncontrolled urbanisation leading to their encroachment for construction activities; dumping of sewage, industrial waste water and construction debris and a shift from community-based water-use system to individual-oriented groundwater dependent system, etc.

CONSERVATION OF WATER
It's conservation is very important now a days. People just know how to pollute it but are unconserned about conservation. They just use it and non even bother about it too much. If conservation will not be done in a large extent then people will be the only reason to ruin water resources.
They pollute it in different ways that are as follows:
- They throw all garbage on that.
- They spit in that.
- They take bath and wash their clothes.
- Bath of cattle are also done in that.
- Harmful acids are also dumped into water bodies and when others drink it ,they become sick.
- Plastics are also thrown there.
- Even people waste water in many ways- opening the tap for brushing for long time, not repairing leaking pipes, etc.
Conservation should be done in following ways:
- By using water according to need not according to greed.
- Posters should be made to save water and pasted near river on boards.
- By educating people towards urgent need of water.
- Garbage should not be thrown there. Instead it should be thrown in dustbin.
- While brushing water tap should be turned off.
- Leaking pipes should be repaired soon.
So that our earth would not starve for water.
