Essay on Democracy India as a role model

Democracy is a system of government in which citizens elect their leaders by exercising their power of voting. After getting independence in 1947, India, as a democratic country, formed its own constitution. We need to understand the main features of democracy which have been stated in the Indian constitution.

  • According to the constitution, Indian democracy offers right to vote to the Indian citizens. They can elect their representatives who are answerable to citizens.
  • In Indian democracy, rule of the majority is an important feature. The party which wins more seats gets an opportunity to run the government. No one can question the party which has won the seats.
  • Irrespective of caste, creed, sect, religion, race every Indian citizen enjoys equal political rights.
  • Indian democracy is federal. The states enjoy autonomous power. They have freedom in certain matters.

To sum up India as a democratic country follows five principles – secularism, socialist, democratic, sovereign and republic. By becoming the largest democratic country of the world, it has become a paradigm.

Thus, it is a democratic country of the people, by the people and for the people.
