That is why my first vision is that of FREEDOM.
I believe that India got its first vision of this in 1857, when we started the war of Independence. It is this freedom that we must protect and nurture and build on. If we are not free, no one will respect us.
My second vision for India’s DEVELOPMENT.
For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation. We are among top five nations of the world in terms of GDP. We have 10 per cent growth rate in most areas. Our poverty levels are falling. Our achievements are being globally recognised today. Yet we lack the self-confidence to see ourselves as a developed nation, self-reliant and self-assured. Isn’t this incorrect?
I have a THIRD vision.
India must stand up to the world. Because I believe that, unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. Only strength respects strength. We must be strong not only as a military power but also as an economic power. Both must go hand-in-hand.
My good fortune was to have worked with three great minds. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai of the Department of Space, Professor Satish Dhawan, who succeeded him and Dr.Brahm Prakash, the father of nuclear material. I was lucky to have worked with all three of them closely and consider this the great opportunity of my life.
“Rich people’s dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place,”
“And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?”
Dr Kalam told me that he wants to see young students learn good knowledge in the proper way.
He congratulated me saying that I was doing very good. He wanted me to continue excelling in my studies and extracurricular activities. He wanted me to be a leader that will take India far ahead in future. India should become more advanced and powerful than China. Singapore, USA, Japan and UK.
He told me that poverty is to be eradicated so that all Indians could be part of the global mission that everyone shares. Because of poverty majority of Indian citizens are unfortunately pulling behind the country's progress. It is not their fault. We the leaders must find ways to develop and pull the nation ahead.
India should grow further in the space. Indian scientists should come out with more vision for excelling and leading the space. Now it is possible because we are in the forefront. We should and could make Space as our major earning too. We built a strong defense for India. Now attack anyone who attacks us. Don't hesitate.
Students must inculcate scientific approaches right from childhood. Like I struggled sincerely and came up through my life to climb step by step. I showed that achieving anything under the sky is possible. I want you and fellow boys and girls to strive for excellence to reach even greater heights.
India needs l lot of efforts from all citizens in terms of benefitting themselves as well as benefitting the country. I was not very aggressive in my life. But I want you to be more aggressive and achievement oriented.
Good luck KVN. I will come into the dream again next year. Till then you have my blessings.
With the beautiful smiling face, he disappeared as I fell into deep sleep impressed and mesmerised by his words, as always.
