Answer:
In the era of the 21st century, with the rise of digital technology, many physical items such as paper and pen are slowly becoming obsolete and are being replaced by computers, smartphones and other gadgets. As we know that books are one of the essential tools in learning, they are used in our everyday lives. Especially, taking a look at the world’s current situation with the pandemic gripping the world, all learning has been shifted to online platforms. Online teaching, eBooks, online notes have now become ubiquitous and a part of life for the students. However, it has some advantages as well as disadvantages. Paper and electronic books provide an excellent and effective way of reading, but paper books allow more precise and effective reading. On the other hand, electronic books are often quicker and more convenient.
Most people describe paper books to be “traditional books”, whereas electronic books are described as “modern books”, but regardless of their differences, both serve the essential function of reading. Reading has always been one of the main and important educational elements. So, whether be it eBooks or books, both play a major role in our lives as both have their own speciality.
A paper book affects the reader more differently than an eBook. It has a great impact on how he or she expresses themselves, and it also helps in improving communication skills and opens their mind to new ideas, whereas; although eBooks also serve the same purpose, the ones who love paper books find them more compelling.
On the other hand, ebooks can change their brightness, font, colour, etc., to make it easier for the readers to read. Additionally, when reading on a computer, it allows us to translate any given book, convert text to speech in the form of audiobook and access the books easily. Also, the price of eBooks is less than that of buying paper books.
People who love reading will most of the times prefer physical books over eBooks as they think books are a tactile experience, which means that they are supposed to be experienced first through touch and smell. There is actually something about going shopping in a bookstore, smelling the fragrance of ink, gently flipping through the crisp pages of a brand-new book. There is some strange satisfaction in it. eBooks, on the other hand, are just digitalized text on a screen. Also, it’s been proven that when people are exposed to too many hours of screens of TV’s or computers, they are less likely to get a good night sleep.
We can also say that there is a huge difference when we talk about the two types of books’ size and weight. Books often come in different bulky sizes, take more space and also are heavy. Carrying more than two or three books will almost be equivalent to a work out whereas, eBooks have no weight and can be carried around in a smartphone or a tab. eBooks are more of viewing high-tech software, which can carry hundreds of books. Although they facilitate travelling without weight, they can also break easily, not being durable enough. Also, eBooks require a good internet connection and can only produce one book at a time for the reader, which can be problematic for students who need to study from several books simultaneously.
In conclusion, I would like to say that both paper books and eBooks have their own advantages and disadvantages in reading which is subjective and depends upon a person. But, both of them are means to the same end and serve the same purpose. The decision is ultimately of the readers to decide whether they would prefer books or eBooks.
