If suddenly unlimited resources became my reality and for some reason building a school was posssible the likely location would be in proximity to nature. Woods/forest and it would be arts based. The school would emphasize kindness and teach basically how to be a good steward of this earth. I suppose hiring enthusiastic decently educated folks in arts, math, sciences would be a priority and paying them a living wage would be a requirement with a decent budget. It would have studio space. The school would be loaded with music- and serve the public. My hope would be special needs children and trauma would be served well and the resources available to address needs. The emphasis on arts and nature primary. It would serve a very diverse population. Perhaps the cornerstone would be in the choices of leadership. Right now I would ask my daughters to run it. That pretty much ensures a great school. Would there be traditional grades, tests-not if I could help it. The school would drown in literature and put that front and center. No one would remain as student or teacher that would rather not. The school would be liberal. It would seek to fit notions of community and care. If I taught there I’d be teaching art. There would be model economies, cross age grouping and thematic construction as core. The staff would look diverse and be multi age. IF I ran the school food would be grown and made and served as part of the curriculum under someone extraordinary a la Alice Walters. Being outside would be a right. The school would engage students in raising animals and be vegetarian. If I could I’d like for this school to teach by doing and have public service at its core.
