Across Canada, towns and cities big and small throw spectacular festivals and celebrations for a huge assortment of reasons – holidays and seasons, a showcase of diverse local cultures, an offering of great arts and entertainment, and bringing together locals and visitors for fun and community pride. The special events calendars in every Canadian province list hundreds of festivals spread throughout the year. In fact, if you’re planning a visit to almost any big city or popular tourist destination, you’re likely to find a celebration taking place somewhere nearby, depending on the time of year. However, attending one of Canada’s major celebrations, the biggest of which boast attendance in the millions, calls for some advanced planning to make the most of the occasion and make sure you can find a hotel room.

Montreal Fireworks Festival
The Montreal Fireworks Festival (L’International des Feux Loto-Québec) is the biggest fireworks festival in the world, averaging 3 million spectators every summer. Competing teams of world-class technicians present a series of 30-minute pyro-musical displays of fireworks synchronized to a musical score. The spectacular scene illuminates the night sky over La Ronde, a Six Flags amusement park that has hosted the festival since 1985. Crowds also line the banks of the St. Lawrence River and the Jacques Cartier Bridge to view the show.

The Calgary Stampede
Billed as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” the world-famous Calgary Stampede is a 10-day celebration of Western Canadian heritage and culture, which is attended by more than 1.2 million people every July. The event, today comprising a rodeo, exhibition and festival, has taken place in Calgary, Alberta, as a fair since 1884 and a stampede since 1912. The world’s best cowboys, bulls and steers compete in the rodeo, making it a major draw for crowds. Another highlight is the evening grandstand event featuring chuck-wagon racing, an epic stage show, country music headliners and more. In Ottawa, the Winterlude celebrations also extend down the Rideau Canal, which, during the 18-day festival, becomes the world’s largest skating rink, running almost 5 miles through downtown. Vendors along the rink offer skate rentals and warm drinks. Both Winterlude celebrations feature giant ice slides, ice-carving demonstrations, snow sculptures and snow playgrounds, all illuminated at night for a magical winter wonderland atmosphere.
