Our generation is the most technology dependent generation to date. We use iPods, laptops, television and cellphones to connect with or block out the world around us. One of the most important aspects of our devices is the ability to listen to whatever music we want to, whenever we want to without any hassle. There is no longer a need to drive to a store and buy an album which has around 8 to 10 songs, all played by one band or artist, in the order they desire you to listen to it. Instead we can buy individual songs from any artist we choose and listen to them whenever we want to at the touch of a button. This brings us to an important question: should music be freely available off the internet?

Many people believe that music belongs to the public and should be available to use for free. Those who firmly advocate purchasing music from reliable sources such as iTunes or even in hard copy from a store are labeled old-fashioned. “Why should we pay for something that we can just stream off the internet?” is the argument. Well maybe they are right.

In a way music has always been available for free in some way or another. Before we streamed music from the internet, our parents listened to the radio and got to listen to music for free from there. The difference is now we can listen to whatever we want to, whenever we want to, for free. Not what the radio DJ decides we want to listen to. Yet still, radio stations were there to promote artists whom the public would later support by buying albums so that they could listen to the music they loved on a more regular business.

We argue that music should be available to us for no charge. Yet, here is one glaring question: If we are getting music for free, then how are musicians making a living? Many would say that the times demand that they make their money off concerts and band merchandise such as T-shirts. But I argue with this, why should musicians have to work that hard in order to make something we use for nothing. The hours of time and the amount of money they spend on agents, recording, advertising, instruments and playing, we have decided isn’t actually worth anything. We have decided that we should just be able to use it for ourselves with no real benefit to them. Is it fair to treat the musicians that you claim to love and support in such a way?

There are inexpensive ways to support the artist and still get large amounts of music to listen to. There are internet streaming services that buy music from record companies or artists and then charge a small monthly or annual fee so that you can use their service. This also allows you to get cheap music but still stay within legal limitations. Most companies that offer you free music from any artist are actually illegal and thus should not be used by us.

I ask you to make a decision about whether you are willing to download free music in the future. Decide if you are willing to use music in a way that doesn’t actually support the musician you are a fan of. In the end it is up to us to take the step and say that we will either support the illegal and free way of owning music or the path that supports the hardworking musicians that provide us with entertainment daily. What will you choose?
