Introduction:
Jallikattu is a bull taming sport which is practised in Tamil Nadu. it is also known as MANJU VIRATTU or ERUTHAZHUTHAL. The Jallikattu is practised as a tamil tradition during the pongal celebrations.
The sudden outrage:
Last year then the environment ministry amemded its earlier notification, intially issued by UPA in 2011, and declared that the sport can be carried irrespective of the imposed ban. A reaserch conducted stated that the bulls were being disoriented delibrately. They said that the bulls tail was being bitten and twisted, stabbed and punched and dragged on the train. Unfortunately these were wrong statements made by PETA.
Why is PETA keen on banning Jallikattu?:
In January 2016, the central government lifted the ban on request of Tamil Nadu Government. This notification was challenged by PETA and other such welfare Oraganizations in the Supreme Court. PETA insists that 'cruelty' is not limited to slaughter but includes unnecessary suffering and torture on animals for the purpose of human entertainment. Hence PETA advocates that it is the fundamental right of citizens to have compassion for all living creatures and to protect wildlife.
Tamilians protest against the ban of Jallikattu:
The protesters want to fight because it is their culture and Tamil pride and they reject the allegation tht Jallikattu is cruel to bulls. They have also demanded that animal rights organisation PETA, which has lobibed against Jallikattu, be banished from the state. The protestors say that the law on cruelty to animals must be amended to include Jallikattu bulls on a list of trained animals used in the military or for educational and scientifis purposes.
