The architect of modern India,Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad. Moti Lai Nehru, his father was a great lawyer. His mother’s name was Swarup Rani. Nehru’s initial education was completed at home. But at the age of 15, he was sent to the most expensive school Harrow in England. He completed his higher studies in London’s famous Cambridge University. Later he studied Law and became a lawyer. He began his practice at Allahabad High Court.
Jawaharlal Nehru’s political career began in 1916. He met Gandhiji for the first time at the Congress session in Lucknow. After that Nehru jumped in to the freedom struggle and left his low practice. He actively participated in Non Cooperative movement. He was sent to jail several times. He was selected as president of Indian National Congress five times. Under his president ship, Congress demanded complete independence from British rule in 1929. After India’s independence, he became India’s first Prime Minister. He was the founder member of theNon Aligned Movement. He was a great statesman, an idealist and a dreamer.
Pandit Nehru loved children. And the children called him Chacha Nehru with love. His birthday is now celebrated as Children’s Day. Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the greatest leaders in India.
