For those living in the 19th century this was the time seen as the century of development in regard to social change. Prior to the 19th century the concept of slavery was practiced all over the world, however, as people entered in this new era, they found that they no longer had to be dealt as slaves and face bigotry.

In this time period developments weren't only limited to social change, in fact, developments took place in the business and trade industry as the Industrial Revolution began. This wasn't the first one, it was the 2nd industrial revolution, which led to huge urbanization and high levels of productivity. This helped to achieve the ultimate goal of profit making.

Even though slavery discontinued, imperialism was yet widely practiced. European imperialism brought much of Asia and almost all of Africa under colonial rule.

This century was associated with the collapse of the Spanish, Napoleonic, Holy Roman and Mughal empire's in this century. In this time period, the British Empire's influence also grew. Other emerging powers like the Russian Empire, the United States, the German Empire, the French colonial empire and Meiji Japan were also seen.

In the 1815, the British had proven to be the most dominant. Following the French Empire and Napoleon Wars, the way was paved for the expansion of British and Russian empires.

Nearing the end of the 19th century, the British Empire controlled a fifth of the world's land and one quarter of the world's population.

In times of post-Napoleonic era, it enforced what became known as the Pax Britannica, which showcased globalization and economic integration on a massive scale.
