Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad on August 29, 1905. Right
from his childhood he had a fascination for sports. However, he joined
the army at the age of sixteen. He continued playing hockey in the army.
He and his team won the gold medal in hockey at the Amsterdam
Olympics. He was the core of the Indian team which won three successive
gold medals at the Olympics.
Recognising the contribution of Dhyan Chand in hockey, the Indian
government honoured him with the Padma Bhushan. His contribution in the
field of hockey was also appreciated internationally. In the 1936 Berlin
Olympics he was honoured with the Olive Crown and in the 1968 Mexico
Olympics as 'Distinguished Guest'. He died in 1979 at the age of 74.
