is still one of the most important scientists who ever lived. In a field that even late in her life was totally dominated by men, her accomplishments are even more outstanding. She is still the only person to have won two Nobel Prizes in two different science categories.
Her major contribution, made with with her husband Pierre and the scientist Henri Becquerel, was developing an understanding of the new phenomena of radioactivity. Their studies in this field are still the standard almost a century later. However, she did not understand the risks posed by radioactive material and her exposure to it led to her death at the age of 66. She helped develop the theory of radioactivity that is still held to be largely correct, was the first to isolate radioactive isotopes, and discovered the elements radium and polonium.
