It has very nearly been 66 years since we, as one nation, took the reins of our destiny in our own hands. And while that still places us as a relatively young democracy.

The modern age is the age of science, technology, knowledge and information. All these are the interrelated and different aspects of the same thing.

Explosion of knowledge and information, based on breathtaking advancement in the field of science and technology, has bestowed on man powers enviable even for gods. It has helped man conquer space and time. Now he has unraveled many mysteries of nature and life and is ready to face new challenges and move forward in the realm of the unknown and the undiscovered.

In India there has been a long and distinct tradition of scientific research and technological advancement since ancient times. Since independence, we have accelerated our speed and efforts in this field and have established many research laboratories, institutions of higher learning and technical education. The results have been such as would make anybody’s heart swell with pride, confidence and a sense of fulfillment. The best, however, is yet to come.

The vastness and the diversity of this nation make this task no easier. With a colourful and noisy population, India is perhaps the most perfect example of what anthropologist Edward Hall described as a “high-context” society.

In the years just prior to the mutiny it seems that many factors combined to create a climate of social and political unrest in India.
The technological changes and progresses that were made in the Revolt were quite extraordinary. When you start to look into it a notable aspect of the technological progress in India was its dependence on state support. The country was also lucky to have a very large pool of relatively cheap skilled labor and manufacturing processes were optimized to take full advantage of them. Perhaps the most important of the different factors was the relative prosperity that India enjoyed in relation to the rest of the world.
