We go to school to learn how to work hard for money; but, sadly, we are taught subjects that we might not ever need. Out of all the subjects ever taught to me, I believe that math is the most important. The only issue about the math curriculum taught in high school is that it fails to teach students the importance of being financially stable. If I could add a subject to the American high school curriculum, it would be Personal Finance. This way, students can learn the importance of budgeting their money, how to pay bills and save money, understanding loans, credit, and banks, and how to avoid living beyond your needs. Let’s help build a stable future for the next generation by teaching them the importance of understanding money.

I know the purpose of the American curriculum is to create well rounded students ready to enter college or the work force. Therefore, we are all taught subjects that we may need and extra subjects that we do not. In the end, every one of us graduates knowing the basics of each subject that high school has provided us with. For instance, I was able to learn the functions of the human body, the mysteries of space in science class, and balancing equations in my science classes. I’ve learned how to find any variable in an equation and finding the length of a line in any shape in math class, how to analyze many great literature's, memorized historical events in U.S history, and studied the human brain in psychology. But by my junior year of high school, I was unable to tell the difference between a common stock and a preferred stock was; I had no idea what an APR was and how important it was when it comes to credit cards. With only one more year of high school, I was completely in the dark and was no where near ready for the real world when it came to finance.

What is the number one problem college students and young working adults will face after high school? They might all struggle with money. What does every teenager believe due to their youth? Their invincibility. Whether it’s figuring how to pay for classes or paying bills, every student will learn the harsh reality that money really controls that world through a personal finance class. A Personal Finance class for all four years of high school will teach students how to budget and living beyond their needs can cause major financial troubles. This subject will help students to understand which loans to take out for college, such as between subsidised and unsubsidized loans. It will also help them to understand the stock market at a young age; therefore, helping them to make more money in the long run. I took an elective in high school that focused on finance and how to understand loans, which stocks to invest in, credit cards, and the fact that the value of money depreciates even when you put it in a bank. There is so much more to life and a lot of it focuses on understanding how money works in the world-- thus, why not educate the young generation on how to be better prepared through a Personal Finance class.
