हिमालय पर्वतों का राजा है । यह बहुत विशाल है । इसमें अनेक चोटियाँ हैं । माउंट एवरेस्ट इसकी सबसे ऊँची चोटी है । बहुत सी अन्य चोटियों भी आसमान को छूती नजर आती हैं । भारत के उत्तर में स्थित लगभग 2500 किमी लंबी यह पर्वत श्रुंखला एक सजग प्रहरी की भाँति दिखाई देती है । हिमालय की गोद में बसे गाँव और शहर एक ऐसी सभ्यता के साक्षी हैं जो युगों-युगों से चली आ रही है ।

हिमालय का महत्त्व आदि काल से है । पुराणों में भी इसका वर्णन मिलता है । कहा जाता है कि देवाधिदेव महादेव हिमालय में कैलाश पर्वत पर निवास करते हैं । योगी यहाँ ध्यान लगाते रहे हैं । वे यहाँ की गुफाओं में निवास कर तपस्या करते रहे हैं । हिमाल के आँचल में बद्रीनाथ, केदारनाथ, अमरनाथ आदि प्रसिद्ध तीर्थस्थल हैं । देश-विदेश के लाखों लोग हर वर्ष यहाँ तीर्थयात्रा पर आते हैं । बहुत से लोग यहाँ के दर्शनीय स्थलों को देखने के लिए तथा पर्वतीय स्थलों पर पर्यटन के लिए आते हैं । यहाँ के अनेक स्थानों पर बर्फ पड़ती है अत: लोग यहाँ स्कीइंग, आइस हाँकी जैसे खेलों का आनंद लेते हैं ।

पर्वतारोहियों के लिए हिमालय से अच्छी जगह कोई और नहीं हो सकती । संसार के विभिन्न भागों के साहसी लोग सर्वोच्च पर्वत शिखर एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ाई कर चुके हैं । अन्य पर्वत शिखरों पर चढ़ने लोग आते ही रहते हैं । अत: यहाँ कई प्रशिक्षण केन्द्र भी हैं जहाँ इच्छूक लोगों को हिमालय पर चढ़ने का प्रशिक्षण दिया जाता है ।
