Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru was a veteran Independence activist and senior leader of the Congress party. He closely worked with Mahatma Gandhi and had assisted in almost all of his freedom movements- non cooperation and civil disobedience etc. Though, belonging to an affluent family, hailing from Allahabad, Pt. Nehru jumped into the freedom struggle at a very early age. He trained to be a Barrister, in Inner Temple London and returned to India to pursue his career and thus got himself enrolled in Allahabad High Court.He worked in close proximity with Mahatma Gandhi, during the freedom struggle and demanded complete independence from British Raj in 1929, while he was the President of the Indian National Congress. He became more and more popular in Indian politics as the country moved towards independence. He delivered a famous speech “Tryst with Destiny” on the eve of Independence and subsequently became the first Prime Minister of India, from 1947, until his death in 1962.

Jawaharlal Nehru' was born on 14th November, 1889 at Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father's name was Pt. Moti Lal Nehru, who was a famous lawyer. His mother's name was Swaruprani. Jawaharlal was the eldest of three children, two of whom were girls.

Jawaharlal Nehru got his early education at home. Later, he went to England for higher education. He graduated from the Cambridge University. In 1912, he returned to India. In 1916, he got married to Kamla Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru met the top Indian leaders like M.K. Gandhi, G.K. Gokhale, Dr. Annie Bessant and C.R.Das. In 1920 he joined the Non-co-operation Movement started by Gandhiji. He took part in the Civil Disobedience Movement. In 1942 he also joined Gandhiji's Quit India Movement. Jawaharlal Nehru was sent to Jail many times. Finally, on 15th August 1947, India got her freedom. Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India.
