Proactive efforts I would undertake to ensure Swachhta in society

‘Swachchta’ is a term we are all aware of, due to the fact that the government has initiated the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ campaign.  Do we associate with it too? If so, how?

We are all aware of the need for a ‘Swachcha Bharat’ having a clean and pollution free environment. Many of us passionately dream of it too. We even talk about it with friends and relatives, time and again. But what do we do about it?

Defecation comes in many forms and is done in many ways. We are all openly averse to it. I would want to be a doer than a talker. I want to be part of such a campaign to make a difference in our society. Being an individual, I will start small by taking simple, effective steps and build on them to improve my contribution and for better result.

We all keep our own living spaces clean and maintain it too. I will first start my ‘Swachchta’ initiative with my immediate surrounding areas and expand my program to cover more areas after that. I will ensure that the common areas in our building and other open areas are litter free, desecration free (no spitting), cleaned everyday etc. I will ensure that there is greenery in open spaces which would enhance, both aesthetic appeal and healthy living.

To make a difference in our neighbourhood I would want the cooperation of some friends and neighbours. I would start a campaign to promote consciousness of cleaner environment among our community and also neighbouring ones. I would also need to stress on the necessity of action needed on a larger scale for effective results covering the whole neighbourhood and surrounding areas.

I will make posters and encourage people to join us on Sundays and other holidays to come together and act on our commitments of ‘Swachchta’ in our locality. Whenever I observe someone desecrating in public by either spitting, littering or any other way, I would make it a point to talk it over with them to stress the need for abstinence from such desecration. This is easier said than done, esp. in India, with such a large population and with many of them illiterate. But one cannot ignore such facts if one wants healthy living and swachcha environment.

The next step would be to spread such endeavours through social networking platform to have a positive impact on other areas. To act as an example to others by making a positive and effective change for betterment in society.
I have also noticed people, especially children throwing litters like wrappers, plastic carry bags etc. through car windows. Sometimes even elders have been seen to do this. I would have a special message spread through advertisements or social media to encourage people to have small portable litter box in their vehicles to avoid this nuisance.

I would strive to encourage people to plant more trees regularly to enhance greenery. I would also approach people working in government on this initiative to support my cause for more effective results. I would encourage the government to have inclusive programmes too, to promote such ‘Swachchta’ drive and also include people interested or active in such initiatives, for faster and result oriented impact of ‘Swachchta’ in our society.
