When earth rotates on its axis the earth is said to be in rotation. that means a complete day. Earth takes about -

24 hours , 12 minutes , 23seconds , 2 ms

to complete a whole one rotation .

When earth rotates on its axis then only nights and days are cause if the earth will stop rotating no night and no day will be caused ,that is why it is necessary for earth to keep rotating.
