the British in India established their rule over the entire country. they had to civilise the natives by giving them proper education and by changing their customs and values
the British introduced modern Western education to prepare some Indians to work at low posts in the administration. James mill has an opinion that Indians would be made familiar with scientific and technical advances that west had made, rather with the poetry and sacred literature of the orient. Thomas babington Macaulay emphasised the need to teach Indians the English language. the English education act of 1836 made English the medium of introduction for higher education. British also believed that of Indians were exposed to western thoughts and ideas they would becomes supporters of British rule in India.
for this the British took several measures to uplift the Indian's educational system. they set up educational departments of the government. universities were established in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. up up to the mid of 19th century, the company's primary concern was to improve higher education. new routines and rules were introduced. the teaching was now to be based on textbooks and learning was to be tested by the system of annual examination. students were asked to pay regular fee, attend regular classes, sit on fixed seats and obey the new rules of discipline.
