Fifteen years is a humorous essay by R K Narayan about the vital role English plays in our country India. The two main characters are the English language and a judge who is against the idea of English being spoken in the country.

Before Independence, it was considered as a matter of prestige and status symbol if one spoke English. If one spoke this language, he/she had an extremely good qualification and it increased the chances of getting a better job.

However, soon after independence, regional languages started gaining more importance. A sense of patriotism and regionalism manifested itself in the minds of the very same people who had earlier supported English. This forced people to refuse to accept English and it was considered prestigious to support the abolition of the language.
