Movies have been a popular source of entertainment at all times and for all generations. The trends in the kinds of movie that get produced, have undergone several changes. Movies are great resource for visual learners because they enable them to understand concepts without the barriers that hinder learning. Sometimes auditory learning or learning through reading doesn't come easily to students. Movies are a way to take your mind off your troubles for a few hours. This is why even during the Great Depression, people would still go to the movies, and some classics such as King Kong even came out around that time.
However, since movies are a storytelling medium, they can introduce new ideas and concepts to you just like a book can. Sometimes, a movie can even change a person’s life through those ideas, or they can be used to bring attention to an issue. Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator brought attention to the plight to the Jews living under Nazi Germany’s rule, for example.
Even some of the simpler movies can have this effect. One personal example is the recent Pixar movie Coco. Even though it’s a “kid’s movie,” it presents themes about loss, love, responsibility, and relationships. You may remember the movie’s signature song, “Remember Me.” When I was leaving for college, I decided to visit one of my best friends before leaving. As I said goodbye and drove away, that song came into my head, and I actually got pretty emotional because it reminded me that even though I’m leaving, our relationship will stay strong as long as I make the effort to “remember him.”
