Explanation:

The level of fresh drinking water is becoming less day by day on the earth. There is a limited availability of drinking water on the earth however that too is getting polluted because of human activities. It is tough to estimate the possibility of life on the earth in the absence of fresh drinking water. Water pollution is the mixing of foreign substances by means of organic, inorganic, biological and radiological in the water degrading the quality and usefulness of water.

Hazardous pollutants may contain various types of impurities including harmful chemicals, dissolved gases, suspended matters, dissolved minerals, and even microbes. All the contaminants reduce the level of dissolved oxygen in the water and affecting the lives of animals and human beings to a great extent. Dissolved oxygen is the oxygen present in water required by the aquatic system to continue the lives of plants and animals. However biochemical oxygen is the demanded oxygen by the aerobic micro-organisms to oxidize organic matters of wastes.

Water pollution is caused by two means, one is natural water pollution (due to the leaching of rocks, decay of organic matters, decay of dead matters, silting, soil erosion, etc) and another one is man-made water pollution (due to the deforestation, set up of industries near large water bodies, high level emission of industrial wastes, domestic sewage, synthetic chemicals, radio-active wastes, fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides etc).

In simple words, Water pollution can be defined as the contamination of water bodies. Water pollution is caused when water bodies such as rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater, and aquifers get contaminated with industrial and agricultural effluents, water gets polluted and it adversely affects all lifeforms that are depended on this source.

Water pollution befalls when contaminators are indirectly or directly released into water bodies with no sufficient treatment to eliminate toxic compounds. Water pollution harms plants and animals inhabiting in these water bodies. In most cases, the outcome is destructive to only specific population and species but further to the biological communities that occur naturally.

Nearly 6 billion kilograms of garbage is dumped every year in the oceans. Also, there are industrial effluents, untreated sewage, nuclear waste, oil spills, and several other pollutants being dumped into water bodies around the world.

As a result, rivers, lakes, and groundwater are rendered to be ‘not fit’ for usage. The river Ganges is testified to be one of the most contaminated rivers in the world as hundreds of industries around this area release their effluents into the river. Apart from this, religious activities such as burials and cremations near the shore contribute towards pollution. Apart from the ecological implications, river pollution gives rise to numerous human diseases like typhoid and cholera.

As per a survey, by the end of 2026, around 4 billion people will face the shortage of water by the. Presently, around 1.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean, potable water and proper sanitation. It is projected that nearly 1000 children die every year in India due to issues related to water. Humans are not the only living entities that face issues concerning water pollution. Many organisms face water scarcity and even death as a result of pollution
