We live in an era where social synergy has become increasingly decisive on our existence and growth. Everyday poses new challenges that a human has to face. Humans have been laboring to increase the ease of living by employing logic and science to the problems and situations in life. This is definitely required, but in a bounded way. Not all problems and situations are dependent on logic and pure human brain applications. A proper mix of emotions like, love, respect, hope, anxiety, enthusiasm, empathy etc. along with logic is vital. No triumph has ever been witnessed in human history where humans have only used logic as a tool. To address this issue of using only logic for solving problems was addressed by Rabindranath Tagore.

Rabindranath Tagore is India’s pride in Literature. He was considered to be among the best exceptional writers in India at a time when British rule was existential, and even to this day, people appreciate his art of writing. The title of this essay aptly suits all individuals who think and believe that logic is the solution to all problems. Tagore, with his powerful statement on the usage of mere logic, had put the greatest of the minds to reflect on their logic applications for the problems.

Looking at the descriptive meaning of the quote, “A mind all logic is like a knife all blade, it makes the hand bleed that uses it”, we can portray that Tagore had expressed his objection for those who use pure logic in all situations and conditions. Those who use only logic to achieve the solution for a problem are referred to as persons who use a knife with only blade. A knife has basically two parts — blade and handle. Logic is portrayed as the knife and all other characteristics of humans like emotions, creativity, intelligence as the handle. We need both parts of the knife to use it effectively and with no harm. Absence of any part would render the knife as harmful and inappropriate to use.

Logic is defined as a ‘thought or ‘reason’. Although the meaning of logic cannot be decided, it is dependent on the context it is being used in. We will restrict our understanding of logic to ‘reason’ in this essay. People who believe that problems can be solved based on logic are in a great misconception. The human world consists of people with divergent culture, diverse background, and distinct psyche. All these variations create problems that are exclusive and contrary to the previous problems. Therefore using the same logic for all the problems is insignificant and should be ruled out. Application of logic alone can be destructive just as in the case of handling a knife with only blade. It bruises the person who uses it.

Emotion + Logic = Life

“…it makes the hand that uses it bleed.”, is the beauty of the word play by Tagore. He labeled destruction beautifully analogous to the last phrase of the quote. Emotions stabilize the human and gives him the extra add-on to solve the problem by considering the human aspect and approach. It is important to add the human factors to solving of issues. For example, if we are to solve a dispute between two communities fighting over a source of water, we can generate a solution in two ways: solely by the use of logic, or by combining the power of logic and the touch of emotions. Using mere logic, we can conclude that the water be divided equally to both. In the other case, we need to evaluate the extent of trouble both the communities face, whether there is any other source of water and many other human factors. The solution obtained in the latter approach is effective and more likely to solve the dispute. Therefore, usage of mere logic can bleed the hands of the person who uses it.

Human emotions are essential part of the life.

Humans have been using logic to solve problems for a long time. Yet, there is no evidence or incident that indicates that victory has been achieved only by the usage of logic and no other emotional and human factors. All the wars and great victories were accomplished by using the fully functional knife, that is, by using both logic and emotions in right proportions. Great philosophers and leaders have always taught us to apply emotions and human feelings to the problems along with the right logic to attain the best solution to any problem. People should understand that solving a problem requires both the blade of logic and the handle of emotions. A perfect combination of these essential elements can solve the toughest of problems with the intelligence of logic and love of emotions.
