                     Flood in Assam

The Brahmaputra Valley, which flows through the northeastern part of the country, experiences floods almost every year. This flood leaves massive death and devastation.

Incessant rains have wreaked havoc in Assam even before the onset of monsoon this year, submerging much of Assam, destroying crops, and displacing lakhs of people.

Major factors behind the floods in Assam every year:

Role of Brahmaputra:

Assam is in the foothills of the Himalayas and is formed by the land of two river basins, namely the Brahmaputra and the Barak. The mighty Brahmaputra river is the most important river flowing diagonally through the flood plains of Assam.

Flowing through the Kailash range from a high altitude, this mighty Brahmaputra river enters Assam (low altitude) with a lot of sediments. As a result, the river's sediments and other debris get deposited in the river bed, causing its water level to rise.

Monsoon:

Monsoon is intense in North-East India. Assam receives an average annual rainfall of 2900 mm, with maximum rainfall in June-July.In Assam, 85% of the yearly rainfall in the Brahmaputra Valley occurs during the monsoon months. In addition, the valley receives a good amount of rainfall in April and May due to typhoon activities, which cause floods during the heavy rains in June.

Erosion in river bank:

Sedimentary rivers flowing with tributaries carry soil and sediments along their banks. With this soil erosion, rivers expand as it takes up more area and flood.

Affect of floods in  Assam:

Around 15% of the Kaziranga National Park has been submerged due to the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger mark. Rail services have been disrupted due to water logging on railway tracks. Food and drinking water are not readily available. The floods have caused severe damage to roads and bridges.

Due to the floods, the electricity supply has reached a standstill in many districts. In Assam, 5,000 villages and croplands have been submerged due to the breach of the embankments of the Brahmaputra river due to incessant rains.

Measures that can be taken to control the occurrence of floods in the future:

It must be ensured that more reliable information is made available so that pre-preparation can be improved and residents are alerted in time. A Disaster Management center should be established in Assam for studies to implement various measures effectively.
