Save TigerYet another helpless animal species has fallen prey to man’s greed. The tiger population depletion at an alarming rate is a real concern.According to a recent survey, one tiger is being poached every day. If the present state of affairs is allowed to continue, the next generation will not get to see the majestic animal even in the zoo. Tigers are at the top of the food chain. They are considered as the indicator of the health of the eco system. They are found in a wide rangeof habitats, from the evergreenand monsoon forests to the mixed coniferous - deciduous woodlands and the mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans, shared by India and Bangladesh. In order to save this precious species of big cats, Project Tiger a wildlife conservation project was launched in India in 1972 to protect the Tigers. Launched on April 1, 1973 the project has become one of the most successful wild life conservation projects. The project aims at increasing Tiger population in various bio - geographical regions throughout India. The main achievements of this project are commendable recovery of the habitat which has led to increase in the tiger populationin the reserve areas, from a mere 268 in 7 reserves in 1972to above one thousand in 28 reserves in 2006. Owing to the project, the number of tigers has improved to 2,226 as per the latest census report released on 20 January 2015.However, in order to save the rare cat from extinction, it is just a humble beginning. People, the Government, and the Save Tiger Activists furtherneed to act concertedly to ensure tiger population further proliferate and prosper. The Save Tiger Activists in collaboration with Governmentshould make a task force to save the tigers by keeping round the clock watch on tiger reserves and habitats.
