The only thing essential is an unconditional written order to pay someone, on demand, from a bank account.

Typically a check has: Date, Payer, Payee, Amount written in numerals, Amount written in text, Account Number, Routing Number, Check Number, Signature.

However, these are not all essential in a purely legal sense.

Date: Legally, a check may be written without a date. In this case, the date of the check is presumed to be the date that the check was issued. Pro tip: banks typically ignore the date on the check, and they tell you so in your account agreement.

Payee: A check with no payee specified is payable to the bearer.

Account Number/Routing Number: Practically speaking, a check without bank information encoded in magnetic ink at the bottom is not going to be paid without a great big hassle, and banks will hesitate to process such a check. But legally speaking, it’s still valid.

Amount: The amount is important, but it is not legally required that it be written in numerals, or longhand, or any other way. The law does say that in case of a conflict, the written text is presumed to be correct.

Check Numbers are completely unnecessary as regards the validity, but they are useful to identify particular instruments
