Subsistence farming:

Small scale farming

Used by the family of the farmer

No surplus

No profit

Food crops are used

Eg: Farmer grows wheat and rice only for his family and not for sale.

Commercial farming:

Large scale farming

Used by many consumers

Too surplus

Profit is gained

Cash crops are used

Eg: Farmer grows cotton and sells it in order to gain profit
