 \sin(45)  =  \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2} }

 \cos(45)  =  \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2} }

so

 \sin( 45 ) +   \cos(45)

  = \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2} }  +  \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2} }

 =  \frac{2}{ \sqrt{2} }

 \frac{2}{ \sqrt{2} }  \times  \frac{ \sqrt{2} }{ \sqrt{2} }

 \frac{2 \sqrt{2} }{2}

 \sqrt{2}
