(1 + {tan}^{2} a) {cos}^{2}a \\ = (1 + ( {sin}^{2} a \div {cos}^{2} a)) {cos}^{2} a \\ = ( {sin}^{2} a + {cos}^{2} a) \\ = 1

1
the answer will be equal to 1
as when you covert tan into sin and cos
you will get
(1+sin^2x/cos^2x)cos^2x
((cos^2x+sin^2x)/cos^2x)cos^2x
cos and cos will cancel
and cos ^2x+sin^2x will be equal to 1
