The Robespierre's reign has been termed as reign of terror as he imprisoned, executed and guillotined thousands of people on mere suspicion. Anyone who was suspected of opposing Revolution or even saying against it, was executed and guillotined.
About 17,000 people were officially executed in France, including 2,639 in Paris. A lot more people died in jails or were beaten to death in the streets. Over 200,000 people were imprisoned. So the reign of Robespierre has been termed as a reign of terror.
