A hotbed of the Indian Independence movement through the early 20th century, Bengal was partitioned along religious lines. The western part went to India (and was named West Bengal) while the eastern part joined Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan, giving rise to Bangladesh in 1971). Even today, Bengal is called West Bengal even though it is in the East.
It's called West Bengal not because of its position in India's map but the reason is quite different,
“Bengal” is the name of a region. A region can have several kinds of identity other than political history. The whole of Bengal region is an ethno-linguistic region that shares a
geographical identity (the Bengal delta, the Bay of Bengal),
historical identity (part of the same region in the past), and
linguistic identity (Bangla language).
The Bengal Presidency was once the largest subdivision () of , with its seat in , the capital of British-held territories in South Asia.
Until 1947 West bangal and Bangladesh together were undivided province of British india named Bengal.
Bengal was partitioned along religious lines. So upon independence Western Part of Bengal went to India (and was named West Bengal) while the eastern part joined Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan, giving rise to Bangladesh in 1971)
The eastern region i.e Bangladesh, and its not East Bengal, probably because it’s a sovereign country and feels the need to have a name that denotes sovereignty: People’s Republic of Bangladesh, but in case of West Bengal, the focus is on the location and history, that's why till today the name is unchanged.
So it won’t be wrong to call Bangladesh “Eastern Bengal” to denote the region with respect to West Bengal.
Because it is west to the bay of Bengal
