Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in the USA. He worked on his
father's farm as a child. He was in school for less than a year, but
learned how to read and write. He did different jobs before he settled
down as a successful lawyer and was gradually drawn to politics.
Abraham Lincoln was elected President of USA in 1860. It was a
difficult time for his country, as it was facing many problems due to the
practice of slavery. In the southern states, black people were brought
in as slaves from Africa to work on farms owned by white people.
Lincoln wanted to solve the problem of slavery, but many people in the

southern states wanted to keep slavery. As a result, a civil war broke out
between the northern and southern states. Lincoln fought the war
bravely and declared, “A nation cannot exist half free and half slave." He won the war and kept the
country United.
Lincoln was then elected President for a second term. He wanted everyone to live in peace and was
not against anybody. In 1862, when he declared that all slaves were free, he became very popular
among the people. Sadly, he was murdered in 1865.
