Question :

➢ Every month, Rita buys milk for Rs. 810. When the price of milk went up by 12.5%, she had to reduce her monthly consumption of milk so that she spends the same amount. By what percent did she reduce her consumption of milk?

❒ Topic : Percentage Change.

❒ Let's say :

  • The quantity is measured in liters
  • Rita used to consume ‘x’ liters of milk earlier.
  • The cost of milk earlier was ‘y’ per liter.

❒ Previously :

➺ x × y = 810 ....(1)

Now since the price has increased by 12.5%

The new cost is y + 12.5% of y = 1.125y

Now in order to spend the same amount lets say now Rita consumes ‘x²’ liters of milk. Then,

➺ (x²) × (1.125y) = 810

➺ x² × 1.125y = x × y

➺ x² = x /1.125

➺ x² = 0.889 x.

∴ The percent decrease would be :

➺ (x - 0.8889x) / x × 100% = 11.11% decrease.
