There is always an attractive force acting between two objects of mass m and M when they are separated by a distance r.

Mathematically, it can be represented as

F = GMm/r^2

where G is the gravitational constant.

So when an object is in air, the object attracts the earth and earth attracts the object as well.

Since the mass of earth is extremely large the acceleration produced in it is extremely small.

Whereas, the mass of object compared to earth is extremely small , so acceleration produced in the object is extremely large.

Since, the acceleration is large in the object and we are standing on the earth (as the frame of reference) we see as if the object is falling downwards.

HOPE IT HELPS..... :-)
